Eowyn's Choice

Well, first off, let's take Aragorn. He wasn't really a choice for her in the first place. Yes, she did have feelings of love for him at first, but they were not returned. Despite some people seeing Eowyn as "cooler" than Arwen, Aragorn and Arwen have a history together. Spending a few weeks with someone, no matter how "cool" they are, can't erase decades of time together. Furthermore, Aragorn almost ninety; Eowyn is only 25, and in a way, a child to him. And, in the end, Tolkien makes a point of saying Eoywn's love for Aragorn is not romantic, although it may seem that way at first. And, even if Eowyn had married Aragorn, and "her dreams had come true", would she really be happy as the queen of Gondor? In my mind, no. As I interpret her character, she was in a state of depression and despair before she became involved in the events of the War of the Ring, during the War of the Ring, and would have been after the War of the Ring if it would have not been for Faramir. I don't think that Aragorn could have done for Eowyn what Faramir did for her. Also, it is a common theme in Tolkien to pair "The Warrior" [Aragorn, Eowyn] with "The Pacifist" [Arwen, Faramir]. The Pacifist is usually seen as a calming force to The Warrior, and is able to open them up in ways that others are not. Just as Arwen moves Aragorn in ways that no other living being can, I believe that Faramir moves, aids, and loves her in a way that no one ever has before.

Now, the second most popular choice for Grima, and sadly enough, one of the choices that makes the most sense. Grima Wormtongue. It cannot be disputed that he does have feelings for Eowyn; however, the nature of these feelings - whether they are love or lust - can be disputed. There is an obvious and simple reason why Eowyn did not even consider Grima a "choice", or consider being with him; she hated him. From her point of view, he was a major force behind the near fall of Rohan. And, the assumption can be made that she didn't think much of anything of his feelings for her; she probably thought it was nothing more than simple lust. Granted, there was probably a lot more to it than that. I don't doubt that there was honest love behind Grima's feelings for Eowyn, but it's obvious that Eowyn never took that into consideration. And, finally; Grima selected her as his prize for aiding Saruman. He would be willing to rape her. If she did try to "learn to love him", as some Grima/Eowyn fans say, she would be miserable.

Why is Faramir a good choice? Well, for one thing, their personalities compliment one another. The "darkness and light" relationship is something that's seen often in romance tales, and sadly enough, it's often done miserably. (example: Squall Leonheart and Rinoa Heartilly of Final Fantasy VIII.) However, in the case of Eowyn and Faramir, it's done very well. Eowyn is not a "dark" person, but simply in a dark stage of her life, and due to the development of a pessimistic streak due to the many sorrows and disappointments in her life, it's hard for her to see any way out of it. War has taken everything way from her that she loved; her parents, her cousin and uncle, and nearly her homeland. So, perhaps in her mind, she developed the idea at a young age that if she could fight, she could prevent bad things from happening again and protect those she loved. Now that fighting had failed her, she didn't see how she had anything left. Faramir, a natural pacifist, is able to show her that there's more to life than war, and that problems can be solved in other ways. He is also able to look past the pity that so many initially feel for her, and is able to see her strength, valor, and what an amazing person she is. When you consider all other options, Faramir is simply the best choice for her; he loves her in a way that Aragorn and Grima can't.
