Darkness and Light

One of the things that is easy to miss about the romance of Faramir and Eowyn is the roles they play. People complain that the relationship was too sudden and too random, but they really do compliment one another.

When Eowyn meets Faramir, she's at a dark place in her life. She has no will to live, people. This is hard to understand unless you've been there yourself, and people who have a natural scorn for suicide will dismiss Eowyn's plight as "stupid", or her reaction to what happens around her as stupid. Or, even worse, they'll think that Eowyn is in her suicidal state due to Aragorn, which is...well, it's just wrong. She was in a state of depression far before she met Aragorn.

Faramir, on the other hand, is an optimist. Granted, he is also realistic, but he came from a family that's best described as broken. His father was a harsh man who, despite loving him, seemed to be overly critical of his actions and never seemed pleased with what he did, and while not bothering to hide his blantant favourism of his brother. It would be easy to fall into a depression due to all this, but Faramir never did - he may have felt bitter, but he never lost hope for life.

When they meet one aother, they're as different as can possibly be; after being saved from certain death, he had new hope for life. However, instead of feeling pity for Eowyn, as so many others already did [and which she hated], Faramir instead loved her for what she was - a strong, beautiful, courageous woman - and showed her that life was worth living.

So, get it? She's darkness, he's light.
