Role

To many women who read Lord of the Rings, Eowyn is their favourite character; she is the only female in The Lord of the Rings with a starring role, and hence, the ones that most girls can relate to. Also, for those who have been depressed in the clinical sense at any point in their lives, they can also relate to Eowyn.

What role does Eowyn play in Lord of the Rings? Well, other than fulfilling Glorfindel's prophecy [that no man could defeat the Witch-king, but a woman], she has one of the more interesting character roles in the entire series. Her dilemma started far before The War of the Ring. I found this very interesting, and I loved Eowyn as a wonderfully complex character, and I loved seeing her develop, grow, and change.

Originally, Eowyn's role was to be more or less Arwen; to sit around Edoras looking pretty, and eventually marry Aragorn. [and even then, she didn't have Arwen's emotional dilemma.] I have to say, I'm very glad that Eowyn's role was changed; otherwise, one of the best stories ever written would have lacked one of its best characters, and Faramir and Eowyn would have never fallen in love.

All in all, Eowyn has a very important role; as a female that women readers can relate to and root for, and having perhaps the most interesting character arc in the series.
