Persona

One of the first things you notice about Faramir is that he's so sensitive and kind; he's pretty selfless, when you think about it. Most men, such as Isildur, wanted the ring for their benefit, and took it. In the books, when faced with the ring, Faramir LAUGHED at it. I think that in itself speaks volumes. However, in the movies, he didn't reject the ring...at first, that is. After discovering what happened to his brother, however, he was able to let the ring go, which I think is a lot more than a lot of men would be able to do. He is also a very insightful person; one of the scenes they cut out of The Two Towers was a soliloquy from Faramir after a battle with the Haradrim, where asks; 'I wonder what his name was, where his home is, his family. Was he really evil at heart, or did the Dark Lord deceive him, as he has deceived so many others? What lies or threats led him on the long march from his home?' Also, he is the ONLY person who is able to see past Eowyn's sorrow, and what he sees in her, he falls in love with. This, and his ability to reject the Ring, shows wisdom. He is respected by almost everyone, really - except his own father, who holds all of his wonderful qualities AGAINST him, as faults. This obviously had to hurt Faramir - I mean, it would hurt anyone, which just feeds into my theory that he wanted the Ring in the movies to prove to his father that he wasn't useless.

Many fandom interpretations of Faramir have him a sobbing, overly feminine, pitiful excuse for a man; which, in my opinion, couldn't be more wrong. To me, he's the most interesting man of the Lord of the Rings, and very unappreciated.
