Role

What role does Faramir play in LOTR? First off, something should be noted - he is of the race of Men. And in the book, he wasn't tempted by the ring. At all. The only other human that was able to do that was Aragorn, and that was because he's a "special" human. I think he was there to...well, I don't know, make the readers have faith in Humans. Most of the time, when they encounter the ring, they tend to go...well, insane. Faramir did not. He was probably meant to be the Anti-Boromir, since some readers found Boromir rather disgusting and not a "real" member of the Fellowship. [Um, not me. I like Boromir. A lot.] Also, Tolkien said that if he were any LOTR character, he would probably be Faramir. Not that the aforementioned has anything to do with Faramir's role in LOTR, but it's a neat little factoid, isn't it? Anyway, back to his role in LOTR. As far as the movies go...we can't really judge by The Two Towers, since we more or less got Boromir 2.0. Granted, he did let the ring go in the end, but he was just too much like his brother for most of the movie. Er, not that I'm anti-Movie!Faramir. I like him. I just like Book!Faramir more.

All in all, Faramir was a pretty cool character in LOTR. So nice to see that he wasn't tempted by the ring, and...ooh, he's just great all around. All praise Faramir. [PRASE him, damn you.]
