Gondor

Gondor, the stone land, was one of the two Realms in Exile formed by Elendil the Tall after the downfall of the Numenor. It was one of the most - if not the - powerful kingdoms on Middle-Earth, of any species. When we first meet the kingdom of Gondor in The Lord of the Rings, it is ruled by stewards, not kings. The reason for this is a long, long time ago, Arathorn, the King of Gondor at the time, took a wife that was of lesser status. This sparked a civil war in Gondor, and resulted in the failure of the Line of Anarion. For the next thousand years, the Stewards of Gondor ruled in their steed. They were still loyal to the King, however, and never claimed the crown of Gondor for themselves.

It is questionable if Gondor actually means that much to Faramir. The men of Gondor respect and adore him, but as a child, it's safe to assume that they scorned him. Also, when he let the Ring slip through his fingers and allowed Sam and Frodo to go [in both the book and the movie], he was betraying Gondor. This was actually punishable by death - obviously, he wasn't persecuted for it, since there were more important matters to deal with at the time. He probably wouldn't have been persecuted, anyway - he was the son of the steward, after all, but you never quite know when it comes to Denethor. Not to say that he loves his country - but he isn't willing to do anything for it, or commit acts that he doesn't believe in it its name.
