Luthien vs. Eowyn I never thought the day would come that I would feel the need to do this, but Luthien and Eowyn? Not the same character. There have been a lot of Luthien and Eowyn comparisons made, which to me, doesn't make much sense. I can only think of one similarity between the two women, that being that they both wield a bladed weapon at some point in their respective tales (Luthien, a dagger to Sauron's throat, and Eowyn...well, that should be fairly obvious). But why are they seen as so similiar? Many people also say that Eowyn is more similiar to Luthien than Arwen, and even then, that's not exactly true. Arwen shares Luthien's descendent, shares her apperance, and shares her fate. As I said before, the only thing Luthien and Eowyn have in common is their choice in weaponary. But, why, then, are they seen as so similar? One reason is because they fight. Luthien aids Beren in their quest to retrieve a Silmaril from Morgoth, and Eowyn fights in The War of the Ring and slays the witch king. But they both fight for different reasons. Luthien is fighting for love, and the chance that there is some hope for her to be happy with the man she loves. Eowyn is fighting because she has no hope left, and that is where the key difference lies. Eowyn was not fighting for love, and even if she was, it would be because she lost love (despite the fact that she never loved Aragorn). While they both set out on quests that could very well result in their deaths, Luthien does it because she has hope that she will succeed; Eowyn does it because she wants to die. Luthien fights for love, while Eowyn doesn't know what love is until after her quest is over; the list goes on and on. While they may seem alike on the surface, once you consider their character and motivations, you can see they are different as night and day. Luthien is one of a kind, and in my opinion, no one could ever be anything like her. |
