White Lady
I don't go into Eowyn's first name meaning here, because quite honestly, I don't really have anything to babble about on it.
Her names means horse lover. It probably has more to do with her culture and her Rohirrim status than any passionate
love of horses, although I'm sure she likes horses as well.
Obviously from the name of the section, I'll be talking more about a title she is given, the White Lady of Rohan. Obviously, most
of this is kind of obvious; she's a woman of high status, so 'lady' would be appropriate and she's from Rohan, for crying out loud.
That just leaves the 'white' part. Even though some people today may make jokes, it does not refer to her race; skin color isn't
even an indication of race. Races are more like men, elves, hobbits, and so on and so forth (I really don't think they're seperate species;
members of seperate species can't produce fertile offspring, and men and elves can). Some may think it may refer to her as a pure and innocent
soul, seeing as how both things are symbolized by the color white. However, while this may have been fitting for Eowyn Elfsheen, it certainly
isn't fitting for the Eowyn we know, seeing as how she is actually quite a dark character when we first meet her.
It could simply refer to how she dresses in white; 'The White Lady of...' isn't an original name, since Aredhel went by it all the way back in
The Time of the Trees. It could refer to, essentially, how young she is in so many ways; while she's seen quite a bit in her lifetime, she's still
somewhat innocent in the way that she deals with romantic love.
It could also reference her 'ice' image. Anyone who read the books knows that Eowyn is often associated with ice and winter. The color white brings
both of these things to mind.
All in all, the color white is actually very fitting for Eowyn; she's more young and innocent than she actually seems.
